From the Green Party Latinx Caucus to Mr. Ramon Cruz

Mr. Ramon Cruz
Sierra Club

Dear Mr. Cruz,

I hope this letter finds you well. On behalf of the Green Party Latinx Caucus, we would like to congratulate you on being named the new Sierra Club President. Becoming the first Latino to hold this position in the 128 year history of the Sierra Club is a great achievement.

We also look forward to seeing the Sierra Club step up its efforts to engage and fight against this country’s systemic dismantling of our natural resources; where trees are commodified and water is sold to the highest bidder.

You sir, of Puerto Rican ancestry, saw first-hand how the current resident of the White House treated the Puerto Rican citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria; a most distasteful act to say the least. Yet the Sierra Club continues to work with the two major political parties; expecting them to truly take a stand for the environment when all around we see the current administration dismantling National Parks.

On a personal note, I was a long-time member of the Sierra Club but became disenfranchised when I would see the Sierra Club endorse establishment candidates over true activists who would push the environmental movement further. We ask that you look beyond the two-party system for solutions to our collective plight. That the Sierra Club begin to actively seek and support local and national political candidates who will fight like our lives depend on it, because they do.

As your founder, John Muir, so eloquently stated “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.”

People, Planet, Peace, over Profits.
